Summer is just about over. It's time for the spiders to start looking for a warm place to hide away for the winter. If you're like most people, you want to keep spiders as far away from your home as possible. One way to do that is to start taking precautionary measures while the weather is still warm. That way, when winter finally does arrive, you will have already hung out the no vacancy sign. Here are four simple steps you can take right now to keep the spiders away this winter, and every season thereafter.

Clear the Area Around Doors and Windows

If you haven't noticed yet, spiders love to hang out around your doors and windows. That's because there's usually plenty of dust and debris to provide cover for their activities. Not to mention the fact that the dirt and debris attracts other bugs that serve as mealtime for the spider population. You can keep the spiders away by clearing the area around the doors and windows. Sweep your porches several times a week and wash your windows about once a month.

Keep Dark Corners Free of Clutter

If you're like most people, you probably have a couple corners in your home that have collected some clutter. Unfortunately, those dark corners are the perfect hiding spots for spiders. That's because they know that no one is going to disturb them, especially if the clutter hasn't been moved in a while. To stop spiders from settling into those dark corners, clear away the clutter and bring some light into those areas. This is particularly important in larger closets. Placing a battery-operated light in the closet, and turning it on each time you open the door, will help keep the spiders away.

Clean Out Your Garage and Attic Once a Year

If you have boxes in your garage and attic that haven't been touched in a while, you probably have a spider problem. Spiders will take up housekeeping behind boxes, and inside them. The best way to keep spiders and other pests out of your garage and attic is to clean those areas at least once a year. Move the boxes and clean behind them to catch minor pest problems before they turn into a larger infestation. It's also a good idea to switch from cardboard boxes to heavy-duty plastic bins for your storage needs.

Have Your Home Treated with Pesticide
