German cockroaches and American cockroaches are two of the most common types of cockroaches that invade homes in the United States. They're both attracted to the food, warmth, and moisture inside your home. German cockroaches are significantly smaller than American cockroaches, and their body has a yellowish-brown color. American cockroaches are a darker and redder color. To learn about the main differences between these two common pests and how you can get them out of your home, read on.

What Are the Main Differences Between American Cockroaches and German Cockroaches?

Individually, American cockroaches are a much more annoying pest. They're larger and they also have powerful wings. They can fly around to escape you if you're trying to kill them, and they can also fly on you and land on you. German cockroaches can't move their wings, so they can't fly around like American cockroaches can.

German cockroaches, however, are a more serious pest to see in your home. They reproduce much more quickly than American cockroaches. Female German cockroaches produce egg sags that hatch into numerous cockroach nymphs. They also carry these egg sacs around with them, allowing them to keep their eggs safe from predators. American cockroaches produce fewer eggs. They also don't protect them after they lay them, leaving the eggs vulnerable to being eaten by other insects. The fact that German cockroaches reproduce rapidly means a few German cockroaches entering your home can quickly cause a massive infestation.

Is There a Difference in How You Get Rid of German and American Cockroaches?

When it comes to pest control, German cockroaches and American cockroaches can be eliminated in the same way. The only difference is that a German cockroach infestation needs to be dealt with immediately before their numbers get out of control.

To get rid of cockroaches inside your home, you should start by cutting them off from their food supply. Take the garbage out every night and make sure all of the food in your kitchen is stored in tightly sealed containers. Once all of your food is secured, set up bait traps around your home. It will poison the cockroaches and kill them. After dying, other cockroaches will cannibalize the body and become poisoned themselves.

You should also make sure you don't have any sources of moisture in your home that could attract cockroaches. Empty your pet's water bowls at the end of the day and fix any leaking faucets in your home. Cockroaches are attracted to moisture, so getting rid of their water sources will reduce the number of cockroaches entering your home.

If the bait traps don't seem to be working or if you need a faster solution to get rid of your cockroach infestation, call a pest control service in your area. A professional pest control technician can spray pesticides into the crevices of your home that cockroaches like to hide in, and they'll be poisoned if they move through them. It's a much faster way of getting rid of cockroaches than bait traps, so it's a better option when you need to get rid of all the cockroaches as soon as possible.

About Me
Safe Pest Control Services

Welcome to my website. My name is Trina. I live in the country with my husband, our two children, two dogs, and three cats. I love country living with one exception... the pests! I am referring to wasps, stink bugs, and rodents. I don’t know why they don’t stay out in the woods, but they don’t. They seem to love our house. I was six months pregnant with our second child when we broke down and called a pest control service. The gentleman came out to talk to us, and I had many concerns. I was pregnant, we had a small child and our pets. The professional spent a great deal of time with us patiently explaining about the products they use in and around homes. I would like to share what we learned, and why we now have pest control service for our home.
